The Pharmacy Department at Barts Health covers a population of 2.5 million. We provide medicines management and medicines optimisation services from our four hospital sites across the City of London and East London.

You will support Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians by providing supervised pharmacy services, including dispensing of medicines, and replenishing and maintaining ward stocks.

As a member of the Pharmacy Technician team, you will provide safe and efficient pharmacy support to the dispensary and wards within the Royal London Hospital. You will develop your existing professional, technical and clinical skills through your own continuing professional development to provide and service of excellence to both patients and staff alike.

Main duties of the job

As a member of the Pharmacy Technician team, you will provide safe and efficient pharmacy support to the dispensary and wards within the Royal London Hospital. You will develop your existing professional, technical and clinical skills through your own continuing professional development to provide and service of excellence to both patients and staff alike. The post holder will work as part of our dispensary team, delivering a high-quality dispensing service to a multitude of areas throughout the Royal London and Mile End Hospitals.

The main duties for the postholder will include in-patient, clinics scripts and discharge dispensing, controlled drugs dispensing, stock control, ward stock topping up, medication returns, receiving deliveries for medications and fluids.

The post holder will support the dispensary leadership team by proactively coordinating and managing the flow of work through Dispensary Services throughout the day to ensure an efficient and safe pharmacy service to patients and staff. This role will proactively ensure that staffing and appropriate processes are in place to support the Pharmacy Service.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • BTEC Diploma in Pharmaceutical science and NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy services, or equivalent.
  • Registration as a pharmacy technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)

Desirable

  • Medicines Optimisation accreditation or equivalent
  • Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT)
  • Practice Supervisor, Train the trainer, or equivalent qualification

Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience of working in a busy pharmacy department.

Desirable

  • Experience in hospital pharmacy setting.
  • Experience in medicines optimisation.
  • Previous experience of using JAC pharmacy computer system

Knowledge

Essential

  • Understanding of Revalidation requirements
  • Up to date knowledge of legislation relevant to pharmacy practice, e.g. controlled drugs, Health & Safety
  • Understanding of stock control systems
  • Knowledge of drugs, side effects & where to find further information
  • Knowledge of Safe and Secure Handling of Medicines requirement

Desirable

  • Understand development opportunities available to pharmacy technicians
