Job Summary

Support and enhance the psychological care of clients within the Local Primary Mental Health Support Service, providing brief cognitive behavioural therapy to people experiencing mild-moderate and stable mental health difficulties including anxiety and depression. Design and implement brief group interventions to meet local needs and may also support Registrants in the team with Part 1 Mental Health Assessments.

Assist in clinically related administration, such as supporting LPMHSS screening and allocation processes, and contributing to the development and implementation of audits/service evaluations/research projects, teaching and project work.

This role is integrated into a multidisciplinary team comprising mental health Nurses, accredited Counsellors, Occupational Therapists and Social Workers to support the implementation of the CBT Pathway within the Local Primary Mental Health Support Service.

The post holder will be expected to undertake Postgraduate Certificate Training in CBT with either Cardiff University or Bangor University as part of their role, if they have not already done so. This PG Certificate will be fully funded with professional supervision and ring fenced time to support the post holder’s professional development.

 

Main duties of the job

Contribute to Part 1 Mental Health Assessments either by leading assessments (if a mental health registrant) or by assisting registrants in the service and by offering a CBT perspective. Carry a clinical caseload, providing brief cognitive behavioural therapy to clients referred to LPMHSS with mild-moderate and/or stable mental health issues/difficulties. Administer standardised psychometrics including clinical outcome measures and prepare reports of the findings. planning and implementation of individual or group therapeutic sessions with service users, undersupervision. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in the use of a range of computer packages eg: PowerPoint, Excel, SPSS, Word for Windows, Access, etc. Competent in the use of email for professional communication, in the use of a variety of on-line research databases and of E-Library. Responsible for maintaining accurate electronic clinical records of clinical work and producing brief therapy summary reports in a timely way. Expected to manage, plan and prioritise own daily workload, including managing own clinical caseload in accordance with own individual job plan and with the support of the line manager and clinical supervisor.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Professional qualification, obtained in Health or Social Care that led to professional registration held with NMC, HCPC, or Social Care Wales (as defined to be able to undertake assessments under Part 1 Mental Health Measure) OR Accredited Counsellor with ACC, BACP, HGI, NCPS, or professional registration with UKCP as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor  OR Undergraduate degree in Psychology with eligibility for affiliate status graduate membership of the British Psychological Society  OR  Recognized Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner qualification (e.g. Post Graduate Certificate in Advanced Practice Interventions for Mental Health (APIMH) or equivalent Accredited with BABCP/BPS)
  • Knowledge of Part 1 Mental Health Assessments
  • Evidence of postgraduate training in at least one psychological model/approach/intervention such as CBT, ACT, or Solution-Focused Therapy
  • Knowledge of/training in psychological formulation, intervention planning, and delivering brief evidence-based psychological interventions

Desirable

  • Evidence of postgraduate training in cognitive behavioural therapy
  • Training in risk assessment and risk management

Expeirience

Essential

  • Postgraduate / post qualification experience working with people with mental health issues
  • Providing evidence-based and recovery-focused psychological support / interventions for common mental health issues
  • Evidence of receiving clinical supervision in relation to low intensity/brief psychological interventions and experience of taking a self-reflective approach to personal and professional development
  • Evidence of competent delivery of low intensity CBT for common mental health disorders
  • Experience of audit / service evaluation
  • Experience of service improvement and development

Desirable

  • Conducting Part 1 Mental Health Assessments
  • Working within primary mental health/secondary mental health services/IAPT/Talking Therapies/psychology and psychological therapy service
  • Experience of administering standardised questionnaires/assessments
  • Experience of developing and delivering group based clinical interventions

  • High level of motivation and enthusiasm for CBT

  • Confident communicator with excellent verbal and written skills
  • Ability to develop good therapeutic relationships with clients and practice in a non-discriminatory manner

  • Some ability to speak, read and/or write Welsh, or an eagerness to learn
