Born in Bradford (BiB) is an internationally recognised research programme that works with families, the NHS, local authorities and communities to improve health and reduce inequalities. We are seeking an experienced quantitative researcher to join our Family Inequalities Research (FaIR) team based within BiB.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a new Population Research UK (PRUK)-funded collaboration between Born in Bradford, the University of Liverpool and Imperial College London, helping ensure that the UK’s longitudinal population studies answer the questions that matter most to policy-makers.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an experienced researcher who can confidently work with policy-makers and researchers to identify priority research questions and lead complex quantitative analyses using large longitudinal and routine health and education datasets to answer these questions.

Candidates will have a postgraduate qualification in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health or related subject, experience analysing large health or longitudinal datasets, strong statistical programming skills and excellent communication, organisational and collaborative working skills.

This is an opportunity to work with one of the world’s richest longitudinal population datasets, influence national policy, collaborate with leading UK universities, and contribute to research that delivers real-world impact for children and families.

The post is based at the Bradford Institute for Health Research, Bradford Royal Infirmary. The successful applicant will be expected to work on-site in Bradford for a minimum of three days per week.

Experience

Essential

  • Relevant research experience in the field of epidemiology, biostatistics, or other relevant applied health setting
  • An academic track record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Experienced in advanced quantitative data analysis
  • Experience of working in collaborative research groups including NHS, academics, policy-makers and other stakeholders
  • Experience of collecting, processing and analysing research and / or routinely-collected health data
  • Experience of project management including project delivery, monitoring and reporting

Desirable

  • Experience of disseminating complex research findings in accessible formats to different stakeholder groups including clinicians, policy-makers and the general public
  • Previous experience of developing research proposals and funding applications in the field of epidemiology, biostatistics or public health.
  • Previous experience of working with policy-makers and/or priority setting with stakeholders

Skills

Essential

  • Good time management and organisational skills, able to plan and implement objectives effectively including prioritizing and managing workloads for multiple projects in parallel
  • Able to perform a range of statistical quantitative and analysis techniques
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent IT skills including use of Microsoft office (word, powerpoint, excel, access databases) and database software (e.g. SQL)
  • Ability to manage and analyse large datasets (i.e. longitudinal cohort data or healthcare data)using appropriate statistical software (e.g. R or Stata)
  • Facilitation skills and the ability to work with, and co-ordinate the work of groups of senior researchers

  • Demonstrated facilitative and negotiating skills

  • Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality
  • Underpinning knowledge of cohort studies and complex epidemiological analysis

Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification* in a relevant epidemiological, biomedical or statistical subject.
