Job Summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic and capable service engineer to join the Radiotherapy Physics team at Coventry. The successful candidate will have practical experience in electronic / electrical engineering but not necessarily with Radiotherapy equipment. Full in-house and manufacturer training will be provided to enable the individual to adapt their existing skills to our equipment.

The successful candidate will join a team of specialist engineers led by our technical manager to provide repair, maintenance and development services to the Arden Cancer Centre (ACC). We are located on the University Hospital site at Walsgrave which is on the edge of historic Coventry with convenient transport to the city and easy access to rural Warwickshire, the M6 and the M69 motorways.

Main duties of the job

Duties will include all aspects of the repair and planned maintenance of medical linear accelerators and ancillary equipment.

You will have proven experience as a service engineer, technician or similar role in healthcare, industry or the Armed Forces. We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate experience of fault finding and repair of complex electronic systems. A relevant degree or a technical qualification and proven experience is required.

Although previous experience with medical linear accelerators is not required appointment at b6 will require experience in a relevant area. Relevant areas include high power RF & microwave generation, x-ray generation, high vacuum systems, servo control, digital imaging, radiation detection and medical devices. Supplementary relevant areas that will be taken into consideration include computer networking and mechanical engineering. Applicants with less experience may be considered and initially appointed at a lower pay band.

Job responsibilities

  • To participate in the maintenance service to the highly complex radiotherapy equipment used for treating cancer patients. In particular: linear accelerators, orthovoltage therapy x-ray machines, High Dose Rate after-loading machine and dosimetry equipment.
  • To technically interpret reports from radiographers; and to discuss complex aspects of linear accelerator operation with scientists, technologists and manufacturers engineers with regard to fault diagnosis, equipment maintenance and innovative device development and modification.
  • To construct innovative devices and modifications in order to assist scientists with R&D.
  • To regularly deliver, under supervision, the training of small groups of inexperienced staff and students. To describe machine operation to students and non-technical personnel.
  • To identify opportunities for the innovation of equipment to enhance the service.
  • To propose and develop procedures with regard to treatment machine maintenance; and to contribute to the development and maintenance of the Radiotherapy Quality System. These procedures will impact on the work of radiographers and radiotherapy consultants.
