Pharmacy provide a comprehensive range of pharmaceutical services and extended clinical roles to many clinical areas, including tertiary specialities.
We work closely with our clinical colleagues, including our eight consultant pharmacists,meaning you will have the best possible platform to develop your skills and knowledge and be a part of a Trust providing world class clinical care.
Our rotations are located on all the four main sites and most of your time will be spent in clinical areas, engaging with patients and colleagues.

Main duties of the job
The Pharmacy Residency programme offers:
- Experience across multiple specialities and hospital sites allowing you to develop a wide experience for your clinical pharmacy portfolio, with the opportunity to complete nine four-month rotations in areas such as:
Medicine, Surgery, Stroke, Medicines Information, Intensive Care, Orthopaediacs, neurology, paediatrics, renal, infectious diseases, gastroenterology and cancer.
- A postgraduate clinical diploma with Cardiff University
- Experience leading the dispensary during out-of-hours services.
- Working as part of the Hospital at Night team proactively reviewing patients requiring medicines optimisation.
- Three years of varied shift work to challenge and stretch you to become an expert at prioritisation and organisation.
- Growth opportunity, after completing two years of shift work and your post graduate certificate you will be eligible to progress to a band 7 position.

Job responsibilities
- To participate in the out of hours resident pharmacist rota, to all the Oxford University Hospitals. Service provision is also provided to other contracted organisations. The rota covers weekdays, weekends and bank holidays. This involves working late and night shift patterns. The out of hours service is supported by a senior pharmacist on call from home via a radio page.
- To record all out of hours calls on the on call records database in order to provide a measure of service use, to allow peer review, clinical governance, training and to ensure appropriate follow up of particular identified problems and/or patients.
- To participate in the provision of comprehensive pharmaceutical services for all Oxford University Hospitals.
- Complete a local induction programme including core training, and maintain core skills throughout employment.
- Act as a role model for pharmacy within the Trust, demonstrating Pharmacy Professional Standards and our Trust values.
- Deliver compassionate excellence via a patient focused clinical pharmacy service, in accordance with national medicines optimisation principles and local clinical pharmacy procedures.
- Analyse prescriptions, alongside technical resources, patient records and information from patient consults to form an opinion on the most appropriate course of action, communicate this in a way that supports shared decision making.
- Participate in and promote antimicrobial stewardship activities.
- Accurately and sensitively communicate medicines related information to a variety of healthcare professionals and patients including those with language difficulties, physical or mental disabilities.
- Plan and organise your own workload in alignment with professional and organisational priorities.
- Delegate and escalate appropriately.
- Support compliance with medicines related legislative and regulatory requirements, including maintaining the security and quality of medicines stock.
- Undertake Audits and Quality Improvement Projects to support our culture of continuous improvement.
- Report unexpected or untoward events via the Trust’s incident reporting system.
- Where relevant to a rotation complete training in clinical trials and support the supply of investigational medicinal products.
- Undertake a program of study leading to a Postgraduate Clinical Diploma.
- Support the training and mentoring of our trainee pharmacists and technicians, as well as colleagues who are new to the Trust.
- Participate in weekend and bank holiday working according to the service needs.
- Any other reasonable duties as requested by the Clinical Director of Pharmacy, or Associate Director of Pharmacy Clinical Service.

- Qualified to masters degree level (4 year MPharm or equivalent)
- Registered as a pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council before starting in post [August 2025)]
