We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for two highly motivated, ambitious individuals to join our well integrated team. Two openings have arisen within the Directorate of Neurosciences for two Trust Doctors (ST3+) to start as soon as possible for 1 year from August 2026, with the opportunity for further extension.
We are looking for resident doctors with neurosurgical experience who are already practicing at registrar level, or ready to work at registrar level in neurosurgery. Candidates should be familiar with the requirements of dealing with neurosurgical on call referrals and ideally should have experience of the same. Ideally candidates should be able to undertake some emergency neurosurgical procedures independently.
Main duties of the job
To support delivery of neurosurgical care by the Department of Neurosurgery, Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust & allow the successful candidate to increase their knowledge and confidence in the management of patients in the field of neurosurgery, in line with FRCS (Neuro.Surg) syllabus for specialist training stage. The successful candidate would participate in the academic programme of the Department and would be supported in preparation for the FRCS (Neuro.Surg) should they so wish. There will also be opportunity for the successful candidates to have educational support, including opportunities to participate in audit and research.
The post holder will participate in the Neurosurgical registrar (ST3+) on call rota. This rota is currently 1 in 10 full shift with discussions to transition to a two tier system from August 2026 with the first tier on call 1 in 8 full shift and the second tier on call 1 in 6 non residential.

Education and Qualifications
Essential
- Primary Medical Qualification.
- MRCS (or equivalent).
- Full GMC registration.
Clinical Skills and Knowledge
Essential
- Smooth progression through neurosurgical training scheme.
- NHS experience in neurosurgery.
- Good history & examination skills.
- Able to formulate a working diagnosis.
- Able to order appropriate investigations.
- Image interpretation relevant to practice.
- Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague.
Desirable
- Able to undertake emergency neurosurgical procedures independently
Maintaining Clinical Competence
Essential
- Written evidence of satisfactory training to date e.g. portfolio documenting workplace assessments.
Teaching
Essential
- Experience of supervising junior staff.
- Ability to teach clinical skills.
Desirable
- Evidence of formal teaching course / training.
Clinical Governance, Audit and Research
Essential
- Experience of audit projects.
Desirable
- Organised / contributed to relevant audit project that has resulted in change.
