Job Summary

 

Medical Engineer

The Grade 5 Medical Engineer will undertake planned preventative maintenance, calibration, acceptance testing, and basic repair of medical equipment. The post holder will support senior engineers, maintain accurate records of equipment activity, and liaise with clinical staff regarding safe use of devices. They will develop skills and knowledge under supervision and contribute to departmental governance and audit activities.

Senior Medical Engineer

The Grade 6 Senior/Specialist Medical Engineer is responsible for the service, maintenance, repair and commissioning of a wide range of complex medical equipment, including anaesthetic and ventilator equipment and neonatal care equipment.

The post holder will exercise independent technical judgement, supervise junior engineers and apprentices, provide technical advice to clinical staff, and contribute to departmental governance, policy and quality systems.

The role includes participation in the Medical Engineering on-call rota for urgent out-of-hours support.

 

Main duties of the job

Person Specification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience in maintenance and repair of medical devices.
  • Knowledge of analogue, digital, computer and mechanical systems.
  • Experience supervising others.

Desirable

  • Experience working in a hospital Medical Engineering environment.
  • Knowledge of equipment management systems.
  • Experience of procurement advice, equipment replacement planning and ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems.

Education and Training

Essential

  • Degree or HNC/HND in Biomedical, Electronic, Mechanical or related Engineering discipline.
  • Manufacturer-approved traning.

Desirable

  • Registered Clinical Technologist or equivalent professional registration.
  • Manufacturer-approved technical training. Registration with the Register of Clinical Technologists.
