Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has an opportunity for a permanent full-time experienced orthoptist at Band 6. You will be responsible for a specialist orthoptic workload centred around our Paediatric Ophthalmology clinics. This post is open to orthoptists with post graduate clinical experience only.

The Orthoptic and Children’s Eye Clinic is based on the St James’s University Hospital site in a dedicated unit in the Multispecialty Outpatients building. In addition to hospital sessions you will be required to undertake day sessions in Health Centres around Leeds so a willingness to travel is essential.

Main duties of the job

You will undertake comprehensive orthoptic assessment of children and adults with a wide range of abilities / disorders e.g. infantile cataract, nystagmus, learning disabilities, autism, stroke in standalone Orthoptic clinics and in joint clinics with optometrists and ophthalmologists. The Orthoptic Department is committed to high quality investigation and care for our patients.

 

You will provide clinical teaching for undergraduate orthoptic placements, trainee ophthalmologists, pre reg optometrists and student nurses.

 

You will be prepared to learn and undertake Octopus Goldmann Visual Fields.

Essential

  • Observation skills and manual dexterity to perform the role of an orthoptist
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to provide and receive complex sensitive information
  • Recognises own limitations and refers to superiors

Desirable

  • Octupus Goldmann perimetry

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree or diploma in Orthoptics leading to HCPC registration

Desirable

  • BIOS Clinical Tutors Course and /or Clinical teaching course

Experience

Essential

  • Sufficient post qualification practice to undertake the job description
  • Understanding of investigation required for complex motility problems
  • Able to manage routine motility problems
  • Evidence of continuous professional / clinical development
  • Audit practice

Desirable

  • Experience of clinical education for undergraduate orthoptic students and other professionals
  • Able to assess patients with learning disability
  • Able to assess patients with visual impairment
