Job Summary
- To work as a member of a team, providing specialist assessment, identification of needs and recommendations for equipment and adaptations for children with varied and complex difficulties.
- To liaise with health, education and social services, working in partnership with primary carers and external agencies to ensure the delivery of a high-quality service.
- To provide a specialist service to children in their own homes, respite / temporary home settings and educational settings with a range of complex special needs as required.
- The outcomes for this service provision are to maximise children’s independence, reduce and/or manage risk and improve quality of life. By utilising specialist Occupational Therapy skills in the assessment and provision of specialist/bespoke equipment and major complex adaptations within the context of relevant legislation, policies, procedures and resources of the local authority.
- To work in partnership with other statutory and voluntary agencies in order to enable families to remain in or return to their preferred accommodation.
Main duties of the job
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- To perform holistic assessments of children with complex needs and use risk assessments/ clinical reasoning to identify these needs and make appropriate recommendations.
- To undertake moving and handling risk assessments and provide appropriate equipment / adaptations and training to informal carers.
- To have an in depth knowledge of specific Housing legislation, i.e the Disabled Facilities Grant Housing legislation.
- To monitor and advise as necessary during the provision of major and minor adaptations.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential
- Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy
- Registration with the Health Care Professions Council
- Membership of RCOT
- Evidence of continuous and current clinical, professional, leadership and academic development relevant to clinical fields.
- Clinical Educators/Field worker course or equivalent
Desirable
- Upper limb intervention training e.g Constraint Induced Movement therapy, Bimanual Therapy
Knowledge
Essential
- Knowledge of a range of relevant conditions and their management related to this clinical area
- An understanding of Clinical governance and evidence based practice.
Experience
Essential
- Broad base of clinical experience prior to specialising
- Experience of multi-disciplinary working
- Experience of effective team working across settings
