Job summary

Wye Valley NHS Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and committed Specialist Registrar in Gastroenterology to join our friendly and supportive Gastroenterology team at Hereford County Hospital for a 12-month fixed-term appointment.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a developing Gastroenterology service and gain broad experience across both inpatient and outpatient Gastroenterology and Hepatology specialities. The post has been created primarily to support the Gastroenterology inpatient ward (Lugg) and services, alongside providing additional capacity for our growing outpatient workload.

The successful candidate will work closely with our experienced consultant Gastroenterologists and fellow Speciality Registrars, providing high-quality care to Gastroenterology inpatients and offering specialist advice to patients across the hospital. You will have the opportunity to develop your clinical skills across a broad range of Gastroenterology and Hepatology presentations and to develop a particular sub-specialist interest with the support of our Consultant team.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work as part of the Gastroenterology team at Hereford County Hospital, providing high-quality clinical care to patients across the inpatient and outpatient services.

There are excellent opportunities for Endoscopy training and development. Candidates who are already JAG accredited and have completed the appropriate local assessment may be offered an independent endoscopy list. For candidates who are working towards accreditation, a dedicated training list can be incorporated into the job plan. The department is committed to supporting JAG accreditation in colonoscopy and other endoscopic procedures, where appropriate.

The post also provides opportunities to participate in Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings, clinical audit, Mortality and Morbidity meetings, education and case review, supporting continued professional development and contribution to service improvement.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Professional Training

Essential

• MRCP or equivalent
• FY1, FY2 & CMT1&2 years (or equivalent) completed

Desirable

• Research experience and/or higher qualifications
• Additional relevant qualifications

Knowledge base, skills and experience

Essential

• Current ALS certificate or equivalent (SS1)

Desirable

• Audit and teaching experience relative to career stage

Clinical experience

Essential

• Clinical experience in management of acute general medicine patients from unselected emergency referrals
• Equivalent to completion of Internal Medicine Training Stage 1 with experience in General Medicine / Gastroenterology at ST+ level

Desirable

• Experience of Lower GI endoscopy
• JAG Accreditation

Teaching Experience

Essential

• Must have an interest in teaching all grades of medical staff and other allied health professionals

Desirable

• Teaching qualification / accreditation

Personal Attributes

Essential

• Must be able to relate to patients and colleagues and to be flexible in approach to rotas, etc.
• Good IT skills

• Full registration with the GMC

Communication and Language Skills

• Applicants whose primary professional qualifications(s) were not taken in English and who have spent less than a month in a substantive NHS post, will need to provide evidence to demonstrate their language competence by showing that they have achieved a score in a recognised language test which is acceptable to the Trust such as the International English Language testing System (ILETS) or equivalent
