Job summary

We’re delighted to offer a brand-new 30-hour Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist opportunity within our welcoming Harrow Adult Community Speech and Language Therapy (SALT) Service.

In May 2024, our team achieved Quality Development Unit (QDU) status, recognising our commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care and continuous service improvement.

In this role, you’ll provide domiciliary and outpatient assessment and therapy for adults with dysphagia and communication difficulties, including those with acquired and progressive neurological conditions. You’ll manage a varied specialist caseload, contribute to service development projects, and support the supervision and development of junior colleagues.

Based across Honeypot Lane Health Centre and Alexandra Avenue Health Centre, you’ll work within a supportive multidisciplinary team with strong links to our Acute Speech and Language Therapy Service, Harrow Dietetics Service and wider Rehabilitation Team, offering excellent opportunities for collaboration and professional development.

Main duties of the job

The successful post holder will be part of the SLT team that will offer support and supervision, but they will be expected to work autonomously in client’s homes, nursing homes and outpatient clinics.

– This will be with support from the wider multi-disciplinary team. The post holder will be committed to improving patient experience at all times.

– We will provide a lot of opportunities to engage in service development, including research, audits and QI projects.

– A framework of regular supervision including 1:1, peer supervision, and appraisal is in place.

– We will also support your continuing professional development with training opportunities both internal and external.

Person Specification

Education/Qualification

Essential

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree or equivalent
  • Registration with HCPC
  • Registration with relevant professional body

Desirable

  • Registration with Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Evidence of further study e.g. postgraduate degree, short courses relating to community setting

Experience

Essential

  • Management of neurological and long term conditions
  • Assessment & treatment of complex clients with speech, language, communication needs and dysphagia
  • Working with carers & MDT
  • Writing reports and maintaining case notes
  • Delivering and evaluating training
  • Management of own caseload
  • Applying the principals of research methodology through clinical audit
  • Developing reflective clinical practice in self

Desirable

  • Member of a relevant CEN
  • Experience of working in acute and community settings as well as in nursing homes
  • Experience of supervising junior members of staff

Skills & Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of assessment tools relating the neurological/community client group with speech, language, communication and dysphagia needs.
  • Knowledge of a range of therapeutic interventions relating to the neurological/community client group with speech, language, communication and dysphagia needs
  • Ability to work in a less predictable environment and able to prioritise own workload with well-developed concentration skills.
  • Demonstration of good analytical and reflection skills
