The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust is advertising an exciting opportunity within the Ophthalmology service for a permanent Speciality Doctor in Ophthalmology. The successful applicant will provide a general ophthalmology service and will be based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) but will also be required to work cross-site at Princess Royal Hospital (PRH). The timetable will include a variety of outpatient clinic sessions as well as theatre sessions and on-call. The department currently have 10 substantive consultants.

Main duties of the job

Clinicalo Provide General Ophthalmic services under the supervision of a consultant Ophthalmologist. The post-holder would also be supported to develop a particular interest in a subspeciality area.o Complete clinical sessions in theatre, specialist and general clinics.o Support the eye department 24-hour cover for emergencies as part of the 1in10 non-resident on-call rota.o To support with the triaging of referrals received for the Ophthalmology Service.o Complete supporting professional activities, such as RSTA time including research and audit.o To develop enhanced clinical skills, especially in the assessment and management of acutely ill patients.o To have excellent team-working skills with the abilities and professional attitude to work well in a multi-professional team.o To deliver clinical and quality targets agreed both nationally and locally with clinical teams and commissioners.o To follow patients throughout their clinical pathways.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBChB, MBBS or equivalent medical qualification

Desirable

  • FRCOphth or equivalent or studying for further examinations

Entry Criteria

Essential

  • oShall have completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in Ophthalmology or as a fixed term specialty trainee in Ophthalmology; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
  • oFull Registration and a licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • oDemonstrate thorough understanding of health service delivery in the UK
  • oDemonstrates the criteria outlined in the generic capabilities framework below.
