Job Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced therapy assistant to join our stroke speech and language therapy team in Salford. The role will encompass supporting the speech and language therapists in delivering therapy for patients who have communication and/or swallowing impairments. You will have excellent communication skills and experience of working with therapists in a health care setting. This is an excellent opportunity where you will have access to training, supervision, support and development of your therapy skills.

Please note, you must have the following qualification to be eligible for this role: A Foundation degree Health and Social Care, or equivalent level 5 qualification such as the Assistant Practitioner apprenticeship Care Certificate

 

Main duties of the job

Process new referrals

Carry out therapy programmes with patients with support from the speech and language therapists

Carry out assessment of patients’ communication and swallowing following a protocol implemented by the speech and language therapist

Support patients with using communication aids

Contribute to training provided by the speech and language therapy team

Contribute to projects and quality improvement initiatives carried out within SLT and Stroke.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • A-levels and GCSEs or equivalent(s), including Functional Skills (level 2)
  • Foundation degree Health and Social Care, or equivalent level 5 qualification such as the Assistant Practitioner apprenticeship Care Certificate

Knowledge, Training & Experience

Essential

  • Substantial experience in health, therapeutic, rehabilitation and or social care setting.
  • Evidence of therapy skills competencies
  • Understanding of evidence-based practice and up to date knowledge of relevant literature.
  • Experience working with AHPs delivering rehabilitation

Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Ability to travel between hospital/clinical sites
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people of all ages and abilities
  • Effective organisational skills
  • Ability to carry out treatment programmes and follow senior staff/ registered practitioner instructions
  • Ability to manage own caseload and work without direct supervision
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently using own initiative
  • Good time management
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to changing needs of clients, team and service
