Main duties of the job

Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit are currently seeking experienced applications from dynamic, motivated and enthusiastic Staff Nurses at Band 5 to join our friendly and supportive teams. UHS is a designated major trauma centre and has general and specialist Critical Care areas, such as Neuro ICU, Cardiac ICU and General ICU.

Neuro Intensive Care is a 13-bedded unit offering an integrated specialist regional service for neurosurgical and neurological patients admitted as either emergencies or elective patients within the Wessex region, a population of over three million.

As a specialist unit situated within the Wessex Neurological Centre (a centre of excellence in the treatment of neurological disorders), we care for patients with a range of neurological and neurosurgical conditions, including multi-trauma patients. As a unit, we activelyparticipatein various research programmes and havea team of Nurse Specialists who support the delivery and continuity of patient care within and outside of Neuro ICU.

We are committed to developing you as a Critical Care Nurse and our Critical Care education team provides structured support to all staff. Our formal education package follows a structured career pathway which includes induction training and an in-house Foundation programme. All staff follow a nationally recognised competency package which opens opportunities to apply for an adult Critical Care or Neurosciences course (or both, if able) at degree or master’s level

Person Specification

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential

  • Qualified Nurse (Degree/Diploma)
  • Registered nurse on appropriate part of the register
  • Knowledge of current issues within acute Health Service
  • Understanding of personal accountability
  • Knowledge of own role within the team
  • Provide evidence of teaching and supporting learners in practice in the role of practice supervisor
  • Awareness of evidence-based practice
  • Awareness of responsibilities for management of infection control
  • Evidence of on-going personal development
  • Able to use initiative

Desirable

  • Evidence of recent study
  • Previous experience/qualification in relevant specialty
  • Teaching experience
