The Trust sits at the heart of the community as the main provider of acute care to around 250,000 people in the west of Dorset. Our main site is in the county town of Dorchester near to the world-famous Jurassic Coast and other areas of outstanding natural beauty.
We are expanding our team so need to appoint an additional Stroke Consultant. This is a new role and supports the development of Hyper Acute Stroke Care and the expansion of the Stroke Team at Dorset County Hospital as we move to a shared care model for Stroke Patients between Dorset and Somerset.

Our stroke department provides a seven-day service for circa 570 stroke patients admitted annually from West Dorset, but this is about to expand to over 800 following our partnership with the Somerset Health Care System.
The Stroke Unit is currently being refurbished and will reopen with as a 30 bedded Hyper acute unit. Dorset County Hospital has close ties with a fourteen bedded stroke and neuro rehabilitation facility at the Yeatman Community Hospital in North Dorset. The rehabilitation facility is led by a Consultant AHP, for whom Dorset County provides clinical advice and support as well as cover for leave/illness.
Main duties of the job
Applications are invited for the position of Stroke Consultant Physician based at Dorset County Hospital. We are seeking a new stroke physician to provide day to day stroke care and support with the continued transformation of stroke services in line with our strategy and recent business case approval. This will include;
- In-patient and out-patient care for patients referred with suspected stroke or TIA
- To participate in clinical and other activities such audit, research and governance with the object of ensuring ongoing high standards of patient care
- To contribute to the provision of a 24-hour acute stroke service delivering thrombolysis and advising on other specialist treatments
- To contribute to the consultant ward rounds at weekends and public holidays
- To provide clinical advice for community stroke services as required
- To provide continuing medical education and conduct undergraduate and post graduate teaching as appropriate
- To contribute to the development of clinical quality and effectiveness in other clinical areas where these overlap with developments in stroke care
We are looking for 1 wte (10 sessions per week).

Person Specification
Education, Qualifications & Training
Essential
- An appropriate higher medical qualification – MRCP or overseas equivalent
- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via – CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), CESR or European Community Rights
Experience & Knowledge
Essential
- 5 years clinical experience in stroke medicine
- Experience demonstrating potential ability to cope with the demands of a DGH based Consultant
