Job Summary

An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Trainee APT to work within the Mortuary team at Royal Bolton Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The post holder will work as part of team providing support, after appropriate training, to the senior staff in the running of the Mortuary and Post Mortem Service. The post also includes contribution to all technical activities/duties and participation in the ‘on call’/out of hours service.

The postholder will have access to relevant qualifications/training as part of the role with a view to their development into an Anatomical Pathological Technician.

This training will encompass all aspects of mortuary and post mortem work and become familiar with and gain knowledge in Health and Safety, Trust Risk Management procedures & Human Tissue Authority codes of practice, guidelines and licenced activities

Main duties of the job

The role involves assisting with the day to day running of the mortuary and provision of a very high quality post mortem and mortuary service in accordance with the Trust and Human Tissue Authority requirements.

Royal Bolton Hospital performs Coronial Post Mortems as well as hosting the Manchester West Digital Autopsy Service, and as such the post holder will support this service through completion of Angiography (and such like)

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in an out of hours on call mortuary service.

Qualifications

Essential

  • English GCSE C/4 or Above
  • Maths GCSE C/4 or Above

Desirable

  • Working Towards APT L3
  • IT Qualification
  • Biology Qualification

Experience

Essential

  • Health care experience with patient contact
  • Experience in dealing with sensitive information and distressing situations

Desirable

  • Previous experience of handling deceased patients
  • Knowledge of autopsy, forensic and infection procedures
  • Previous histology/laboratory experience
  • Previous experience with bereavement and / or counselling

Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • IT Literacy
  • Good interpersonal/team skills
  • Mature attitude to deal with the public, including potentially emotional situations.
  • High level of manual dexterity, accuracy with good attention to detail
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Ability to follow complex instructions
  • Able to facilitate the transportation of patients using equipment (manual handling)

Desirable

  • Driving License and Access to Vehicle (as part of oncall rota)

On Call Requirement

Essential

  • Able to arrive onsite at Bolton within 30 mins of contact when responsible for OOH On Call
  • Must be prepared to participate in out of hours/shift working if required

Knowledge

Essential

  • Understanding of day to day activities within Mortuary Service
  • Clear understanding of Health and Safety Procedures
  • Clear understanding of the practical aspects of the job

Desirable

  • Knowledge of HTA/UKAS
  • Knowledge of Coroners role and legal requirements
