Job Summary
This is a one-year training post based at Birmingham Children’s Hospital; 6 months paediatric Maxillofacial surgery and 6 months paediatric dentistry with an oncall commitment commencing in September 2025.
With sessions in oral medicine oral surgery and sedation as well as observation on Multiple MDT clinics eg cleft clinic and craniofacial clinic. This is a non resident oncall but the post holder is expected to live within 20 minutes of the hospital. In the paediatric dentistry placement there will be a clinic based at Birmingham Dental Hospital in the paediatric dental department. It is essential that the post holder must have had a least one years experience of an oral and maxillofacial post with on-call to be appointed. The post holder will be encouraged to gain the necessary competencies to manage simple OMFS trauma (eg lip lacerations) independently under general anaesthesia.
There are two treatment sessions, 1 – 2 theatre lists, 2 – 3 new patient review or specialist MDT clinics eg Cleft, Craniofacial, Haematology, Oral Medicine & Jaw Deformity.
The standard working week is from 8.30am to 4.30pm. On a Thursday/Friday(alternate) which is a theatre day the DCT would be expected to be in at 8.00am. The working week complies with the Junior Doctors 2019 contract.
Main duties of the job
You will be allocated an Educational supervisor upon the appointment. There are 3 monthly governance meetings and department meetings which you will be encouraged to attend. There will be the opportunity to undertake department audit and present case based discussions with in the hospital. Office and library space are available at the trust.
Main Outcomes of the post:
One to one supervised regular oral and maxillofacial surgery under GA
One to one supervised regular paediatric dentistry comprehensive care lists under GA
Examination Diagnosis and treatment of dental trauma in the acute and longer term
Paediatric Dental assessment and treatment of children with dental disease and complex medical histories and behavioural issues
